Michigan Teens Banned from Calling, Driving

The Associated Press reported today that Michigan teenagers are now prohibited from talking on the phone and driving.

The new law was the result of a mission by a grieving mom whose 17-year-old daughter crashed her car and was killed while chatting on her cell.

Calling it common sense, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed was has been named “Kelsey’s Law” on Tuesday.

Kelsey’s Law makes it a civil infraction for new drivers on their probationary licenses to talk on a phone behind the wheel.

Snyder, whose own daughter Kelsey recently started driving, said distracted driving “strikes at all our hearts.”

Young drivers in Michigan are far more likely to be involved in cellphone-related crashes than their older counterparts, according to a statewide MLive Media Group investigation published in February. Since 2002, one out of every five Michigan drivers who used a cell phone during a crash was a teen.
